Wrapper Rage !!!

You've reluctantly bought a piece of electronics that is sealed in a plastic sarcophagus stamped so hard at the seams that you need an electric saw to stand a chance in opening it.

Your fingers tremble at the thought of having to open it, because you just remembered that you lost your scissors last week. You look around for alternatives, but it seems like all other products are packaged the same way. Looks like your fate is sealed (pun intended).

Once you're home, you take a deep breath and prepare for battle. A split second later, the gnashing of teeth against plastic begins. After a few moments of struggling, you finally manage to tear it slightly, just enough to grab a piece with your index finger and thumb and start peeling back.

You've got a pretty good chunk off, but all of a sudden the plastic bends funny and your finger slides too close. Ouch! Your finger is sliced, blood is drawn, and words come out of your mouth that you hope your neighbors didn't hear. You wish companies would make packaging much easier to open, and wonder why it got this bad in the first place.

Sound familiar?

TreeHugger says better packaging could come soon:

"Daniel Howard, chair of the marketing department at the Cox School of business surveyed households about packaging. Nearly 80 per cent of the respondents "expressed anger, frustration or outright rage" with plastic packaging materials.

Howard says manufacturers know consumers are frustrated. But he says they make packaging difficult to open largely because they are afraid of lawsuits that could result if a product had been tampered with, and because they are afraid of "shrinkage," the retail euphemism for theft.

However two trends are causing them to rethink and redesign: companies like Wal-Mart (and their customers) are demanding more environmentally friendly packaging, and the aging boomers are having more trouble opening the stuff without hurting themselves."

I simply can't wait. I've lost count of how many times I've hurt myself opening those packages. I don't always have scissors on me, and sometimes I really need to get what's inside!

I hate plastic blister packaging with the burning rage of a thousand suns. I am thrilled that there is an end to it in sight.

My household has developed a coping mechanism for the stuff, though, since it seems impossible to escape for now. We have a pair of bonsai shears, purchased long ago to tend a tree which now rests in the happy bonsai garden in the sky. Those shears can cut through anything, and they are especially good for slashing apart plastic packaging. They also work well against the stupid coated wire with which every toy under the sun comes bound and tied to it's box. They work so well that getting them out and ready is part of out Christmas morning ritual.

That's a good idea about the shears. I just never happen to have any around when I find one of these packages, and I almost always end up hurt from it.

Hopefully it's really true that this packaging will be phased out soon. I think that the fact elderly people are getting hurt alone should make manufacturers think twice.

LOL! My hubby was admitting to me an adventure with packaging and this reminded me of it!

He said that he stopped and got me a new digital camera for our anniversary, since mine broke. Even told me the brand, but feels it's not giving it away since I don't know what it looks like yet and all of the features it has. Anyhow, he hid it in the closet and one day while I was out, he brought it out of the closet. But let's back up.....

When purchasing it, they rubbed it over some pad and the girl said "hmmm, this doesn't seem to be disarming the security device. Well, let's see what happens when you walk out of the store". He walks out, setting off the security alarms and is explaining what happened while showing the receipt. They still can't get it disarmed and told him to just keep walking when the alarm sounds. So he did and that brings me to when I was gone and he brings it out of the closet.

With our 6 year old and nearly 14 year old sons, he brings it out, tells them what it is and what he has to do with it now (take all of the security stuff off). First, there's a cage around it and he's trying not to scratch up the camera will trying to remove this wire cage it's enclosed in. Then he says there's speakers on either side of the camera, with wires coming out of them. He detaches the speakers from the camera, cuts the wires and..... an ear piercing siren/alarm goes off scaring both of the kids to the point of tears and they ran to other side of the house. He said it was so loud, he was sure the neighbors would hear it. He's trying to figure out how to disarm this thing while losing the remainder of what little hearing he has left and finally had to break into the battery source of the alarm to disarm it.

He goes back to the store he bought if from and tells them what happened and they said" Ohhhhhh, we forgot to mention that".

They are still traumatized and I'm sure I'll hear it all over again when I get the camera on the anniversary!

‘Sacred travel’ lets you re-create yourself at spiritual hotspots

Love to travel but no longer content with South Beach or Vail? There is another option available. A number of years ago, I wanted a trip that was based on personal growth and discovery. One flight = HOW much CO2?! Slashing my holiday footprint …

I did the math in my head. We have one car that barely gets driven, a TV and DVD player that get unplugged when not in use, plus a diet free of meat — and I have to admit that I was feeling a bit overconfident when I plugged my numbers into the carbon calculator [...]

How to make fabric gift bags

A website I visited recently recommended knitting holiday stockings. What a lovely idea, I thought. But I’d have to remember how to knit … I think I’ll just buy some “homespun” stockings instead. Yet there is a simple project I did one year for the holidays that was very rewarding in the same way [...]

Stairs till you drop! Mall shoppers are stepping up

I recently read an article about a mall in England that posted colorful, stand-out signs by the escalator/stairs in the mall last Christmas to encourage and inspire shoppers to take the stairs instead of the escalators. The article noted that “normally, about 4 percent of people at the mall take the stairs but after adding [...]

Stressed? Don’t work out longer; just shake things up

Many people think that tons of rigorous workouts help relieve stress. But research shows that it can actually have the opposite effect. Changing up your routine can ease stress more effectively than doing MORE of the same. How gratitude can transform your body

Thinking about Thanksgiving prompted me to write this blog. I saved it to my computer planning to enter it online as soon as I got a chance. Then coincidently I heard a radio interview with psychologist Robert Emmons, author of a book called Thanks. Emmons has spent years studying positive psychology, and in the interview [...]
